Coalseam
is the site of State's first coal deposit discovery (1846). Mining was
unprofitable, but the old open mineshafts are still there, covered for
safety. Irwin River flows through the reserve. Many unusual rocks can
be found in the river bed and the area is also renowned for fossils.
Take The Midlands Road to Mingenew (370 km north of Perth) and Coalseam
Road leading north-west from the town. The road (part of it is unsealed)
will take you through the reserve. Lookouts and picnic areas are well
marked.
